Dominica Essential Oils & Spices Cooperative Society Limited started its operation in 1964 with the production and exporting of Bay oil and Bay products. Of all the agriculture practiced in Dominica, one plant stands out as being quite consistent throughout a century when other crops have waxed and waned. The West Indian Bay Plant, Pimento racemes is a sturdy evergreen tree of the Myrtle family. Leaves and wood are distilled to produce the essential oil. Bay oil is distilled by boiling the chopped leaves under pressure. Dominica Essential Oils & spices produces more than 60% of the total production of Bay oil in the Commonwealth of Dominica which is the main producer in the world, producing more than 85% of the world.
